Sustainability and Resilience

We're helping make Hertfordshire cleaner, greener and healthier

We're doing this by:

Educating, encouraging and supporting people to ditch the car and ‘Go Green By Train’

  • when and if they are able to

Working to improve links between the train and other forms of sustainable travel

  • e.g. buses, cycling and walking

  • active forms of transport, e.g. cycling and walking
  • when and if they are able to
  • linking to sustainability and health

Reducing fossil fuel emissions

The latest government report shows that transport is responsible for nearly a third of all the UK’s own-produced fossil fuel emissions.

Most of this is from car usage. Train emissions are very small and are decreasing over time – as more of the network is electrified.

To achieve the UK’s Net Zero targets and reduce traffic congestion, we must reduce private car use and switch to more sustainable forms of transport, including rail.

There is still a long way to go to create a fully-sustainable and convenient transport network.

In the meantime, we continue to support and encourage our communities to make cleaner, greener and healthier transport choices.

Adapting to Climate Change

Although we must continue to reduce our fossil fuel emissions, we must also become more resilient to the impacts of climate change.

We are already feeling these impacts, and they are projected to get worse: e.g. more frequent and severe flooding, extreme heat events and storms. These will have knock-on effects on our way of life – including how we travel.

The transport industry, including rail, is already working to meet these challenges and provide resilient services and infrastructure – keeping passengers and services safe and moving.

If you are able to, you can do your bit and be more resilient too. Have a plan for if your usual mode of transport is out of action.

Also, it’s always good to keep yourself as fit and healthy as possible. Including active transport in your travel plans is a win-win!
