Rhymes on the Line – On Tour

Enjoy them at St Albans Cathedral

The railings outside St Albans Cathedral are currently hosting a collection of train poems created by Year Four pupils from Mandeville Primary School in St Albans and Kingsway Junior School in North Watford.

These imaginative rhymes and haiku first brought colour and creativity to the platforms at Watford Junction and St Albans Abbey Station along the Abbey Line. Now, they’ve travelled to the heart of St Albans city for even more people to enjoy!

The poems cover far more than trains — though you’ll certainly find plenty of noisy engines, friendly drivers, and journeys to new places. You’ll also encounter rabbits, sandwiches, worries, wonders, and a sprinkling of silliness. Each piece offers a charming glimpse into how eight- and nine‑year‑olds see the world of travel: lively, thoughtful, and full of personality.

This creative project was led by Kate Swindells, Abbey Line Community Rail Partnership Officer, working in collaboration with Creative Writer Karene Horner-Hughes, and Chris Blanch and Grae Wall from the St Albans Arts Team.

From St Albans to Watford and beyond, the Abbey Line connects more than stations — it connects ideas, people, and possibilities.
