Building Travel Confidence on the Abbey Line
With Work Skills students from West Herts College
Work Skills students from West Herts College recently joined us for a special travel confidence trip on the Abbey Line, travelling from Watford Junction to Garston. For some, this was their first time on a train and an important step in overcoming anxiety about rail travel.
The day didn’t stop at the journey – students also took part in a gardening session at Garston Station’s community garden. Activities included making bird feeders from pinecones, seeds, and coconut oil, bug hunting, and listening for birds using the Merlin app. Wildlife sightings included: a robin, gull, red kite, seven-spot ladybird, Harlequin ladybird, wasps feasting on the ivy, Harvestman spider, woodlouse, and even a European common frog!
Everyone enjoyed the experience, learning about nature and building confidence in using public transport. Later the same week, the group returned for a second trip, travelling by Abbey Line train to visit St Albans Cathedral, further boosting their independence and travel skills.
These activities show how the Abbey Line CRP combines rail confidence building with community and environmental engagement, helping people feel connected and empowered.
