Abbey Line Tales Project Celebrates Community and Rail Heritage
Exhibition at Watford Junction
The Abbey Line Community Rail Partnership has proudly unveiled the Abbey Line Tales project – exhibited at the Walkway Gallery leading to platform 11 at Watford Junction Station.
The heartwarming initiative is part of celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the modern railway and the 20th anniversary of the Partnership.
Throughout the first half of 2025, the Partnership invited residents and visitors along the Abbey Line—from Watford Junction to St Albans Abbey—to share their memories, stories, and hopes for the future of this vital local rail link.

Collected at community events, railway stations, and online, these tales reflect the deep connection people have with the Abbey Line. From nostalgic recollections of steam locomotives and fun events on the Line, to present-day reflections on sustainable travel, the stories showcase the Line’s enduring role in local life.
Kate Swindells, the Abbey Line CRP Officer, said:
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the warmth and enthusiasm of the community. These tales remind us that the Abbey Line is more than just a railway—it’s a thread that connects generations.”

The project also features contributions from the Bricket Wood Society and the Sopwell Memories project, enriching the collection with historical insights and personal anecdotes.
Visitors can also explore the Tales online at abbeylinecommunityrail.org.uk/railway200.
Sandy Norman, author of Sopwell Memories and supporter of the project, added:
“It’s been a joy to help bring these stories to life. The Abbey Line Tales project captures the spirit of community and the magic of rail travel.”

The project is ongoing—new submissions are welcome via the website.
Join in, in celebrating the Abbey Line’s past, present, and future.
